Why Solar Canopy Projects Require Specialized Engineering

A solar canopy combines a PV system, a structural system, a foundation, an electrical system, and site or zoning requirements into a single build. Because it is a freestanding structure classified independently under ASCE 7, the canopy has to carry its own wind, seismic, and dead/live loads without an existing roof or building to share them; unlike rooftop solar, the structure itself becomes part of what the AHJ is reviewing. Most California jurisdictions require an engineered design once a structure exceeds roughly 100 square feet, and freestanding canopies over 120 square feet typically need a full building permit in addition to the electrical permit.
